Removing Shoes

“Take Off Your Shoes and Wipe Your Feet!”

  • Provide your child with adult shoes that can be easily removed.
  • Allow several opportunities throughout the day for your child to remove shoes (before entering the home, before coming in from the sandbox, before going to bed, etc).
  • Model taking your own shoes off.
  • Touch or point to the shoe to cue your child to remove them.
  • Have your child sit on the floor, or in a chair where there is support.  This will make it easier for your child to remove shoes.
  • Initially provide your child with hand over hand guidance to assist with removing shoes.
  • Provide your child with various kinds of shoes (e.g., slippers, sandals, boots, sneakers).
  • Loosen your child’s shoes to make it easier for removal.
  • Verbally instruct you child to take off his own shoes.
  • Multiple trials will help your child to learn to take off his shoes independently.
