FEEDING
During feeding, make sure that your child is always positioned appropriately (upright, at a 90-degree angle). Never leave your child unattended. Make sure all utensils, cups, bottles, etc. are developmentally appropriate. Make sure your child’s environment is calm and relaxed. Too much stimulation may cause a disruption in feedings.
Opening and Closing the Mouth in Response to Food
“OPEN W-I-D-E!”
A rooting reflex typically emerges within the first few months. Usually your child’s head turns and mouth opens in response to a touch around the cheek or mouth. If your child does not exhibit this reflex, use your finger or nipple of the bottle and touch the side of your child’s mouth. Do this before feedings and even during non-feeding times.
