Pulling to a Standing Position

“You’ve Gotta Pull Your Own Weight”

  • Draw your child’s attention to a favorite toy that you have placed on a couch or low table. Then place your child in various starting positions (e.g., sitting, crawling, lying down, kneeling). Prompt and fade support as needed.
  • You can build strength and balance with a stationary “exersaucer,” but pediatricians recommend NOT using a walker because they build strength but not balance and because they significantly increase the risk of injury or death from falls or turnover (in fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to NEVER use a walker).
