Learning Yes and No:
- Use simple and consistent words. Follow your own “no” with immediate and consistent action (e.g., physical redirection, removal of an object) as opposed to an empty threat or inane question (e.g., “How many times have I told you? Don’t make me come over there. Why don’t you listen when I talk?”).
- Follow your own “Yes” by immediately gratifying your child.
- Respect your “no” by backing off of an unimportant request (e.g., refusal to accept a cookie) and by acknowledging the “good talking.”
