Imitating new and familiar gestures

“Monkey See, Monkey Do”

Imitation is a key component in acquiring, maintaining, and generalizing skills.

  • Make sure you have your child’s attention/eye contact. Initially produce gestures with body parts that your child will be able to see (e.g., touch your feet instead of your ears).
  • Use hand-over-hand guidance to help follow through.
  • Point to your hands and then to your child’s hands. Use familiar verbal instructions for your child.
  • Usually especially animated and playful gestures.
