“One-by-One, This Is Fun, Two-by-Two”
ACTIVITY: When shown one to four objects, your child will recognize and say the correct word for the number value (e.g., for two objects, he says, “two!”).
MATERIALS: a cup of at least 8-10 small items or foods (paper clips, buttons, or small foods such as cereal), 8 index cards, and a marker. On two of the index cards, make one circle on each with the marker. On two others, draw two circles on each, two others draw three circles, and the last two draw four circles. One set will be for your child (a card with one, two, three, and four circles) and one set for you.
- Explain to your child that you are going to be playing a counting game today.
- Take one item out of the cup and place it in front of you. Tell your child to do the same.
- Next, put another item in front of you. Ask your child to look at what you have in front of you and tell your child to do the same.
