Cooperating with Dressing and Undressing

“Dress-Up: Mess-Up or Yes-Up?”

  • Create a calm and relaxed environment while dressing and undressing your child.
  • Make dressing a fun activity.
  • Sing songs, put on music, talk to your child while dressing and undressing.
  • Label body parts and request your child to move them while being dressed or undressed.
  • Partially place your child’s body parts in or out of the appropriate piece of clothing.  Wait a few seconds to see if your child begins to help.
  • Give your child verbal instructions accompanied with gestures as you take the clothes off and put them on.
  • Reinforce any participation with hugs, verbal praise, clapping, etc.
