Putting Shapes Together to Match A Design

“Match Game ’77 With Gene Rayburn”

MATERIALS:

Straws, pipe cleaners cut in half, Popsicle sticks, etc. (any of these will do).

Text Box:
  • Arrange sticks into a simple design on the table (a triangle would be a good one to start with, using three sticks). While placing the sticks, tell your child what you are making.
  • Give your child three sticks and ask Your child to make a triangle that looks like yours. Give verbal prompting at first if necessary (e.g., “Look at mine, try again, try turning it around”).
  • If your child can complete a triangle, then go on to make more advanced shapes (e.g., square, diamond, cross, pentagon, etc.), saying each time what you are making and then encouraging your child to imitate.
